About Me.
My name is Stephanie and like a lot of Americans, I was initially content with staying in my comfort zone until two friends, I had known since high school, decided to study abroad. They helped me see that there is so much out there in the world and I become obsessed in researching ways I could explore it. I had just finished my second year of college and soon realized that I had just about missed my window to study abroad. I started to lose hope when I saw in the education building at KSU, a poster advertising the Student Teaching Abroad program. When I got back home I went to the website I had seen on that poster and read more about it. I learned that my school offered student teaching in at least four different countries: Costa Rica, Ecuador, China, and Uganda. After taking the time to research each option, I fell in love with the school options in Costa Rica. The factor I debated most was whether or not I was okay with finishing college in another country. This would mean I would be away from the schools I could build a strong network with and instead I would be in a world full of the unknown. But with a lot of thought I had concluded it was possibly my only chance to travel and do the thing I love – teach. My next step was to get my parents on-board…they do kinda pay for my tuition. So like any responsible daughter I put together a Word document that had all the information I could find so I could confidently tell my parents I wanted to study abroad.
Finally, I had all the information I could find! Now came the hardest part – convincing the parents that going to another country to student teach would actually be beneficial. See my parents have only traveled within the 48 contiguous states (well – my dad has been to Canada before but that was before the whole needing a passport to get over there thing came about.) Their reactions were not exactly what I had expected. I could see their eyes growing as I told them my idea, their heads filling with worry, but the words that they said were not disapproving. After that day, I took that as my ticket to Costa Rica. Immediately, I began filling out the application, attending informational meetings, researching the country and the schools. So here I am…on the brink of my journey – ready to dive into the culture that is Costa Rica.
